Telerehabilitation is the delivery of rehabilitation services from a distance using video-conferencing when in-person physiotherapy is not possible.

Benefits of Telerehabilitation?

  • Continuous care while practicing physical distancing
  • Supervised physiotherapy exercise programs
  • Real-time coaching, monitoring and consultation
  • Receiving care at the comfort of your home

As the situation around COVID-19 evolves, we are providing access to physiotherapy services through telerehabilitation. This would enable continued access to our services and prevent service interruption during this period when social distancing measures have been recommended.

What types of services can be provided in a telerehabilitation session?

Examples of services that can be provided by telerehabilitation include, but are not limited to:

  • Hands-off assessment and treatment sessions
  • Consultation with your physiotherapist
  • Education and instruction with your physiotherapist
  • Monitoring your progress and adjusting your treatment program
  • Supervised physiotherapy exercise programs
  • Meeting with members of your health-care team
Would telerehabilitation be an appropriate form of physiotherapy service for me during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Although telerehabilitation should not entirely replace in-person care, it does provide an option for assessment and/or treatment when in-person physiotherapy is not possible.

How will you ensure my safety during an assessment/treatment through telerehabilitation?

Safety assessment will be something you and your physiotherapist will discuss together. Safety related topics can include location of treatment, camera/computer placement, equipment placement, etc.

Depending on the circumstances, your physiotherapist may or may not request the assistance from another person such as a family member, friend, support worker, etc. As the patient, you must agree to the involvement of the assistance.

What do I need for telerehabilitation?

You will require a device in which you can communicate via video and audio, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer.

How do I connect to my Physiotherapist?

An email link with instructions will be provided once you book an appointment. It will include a confirmation of time and date for your telerehabilitation appointment. You will not need to download any software for this.

Will my personal information be private and secure with telerehabilitation?

At MapleCare, we will use telerehabilitation programs that comply with the privacy protocols. (PHIPA compliant, as required by the College). Your physiotherapist will carry out the telerehab program from a private setting. Consent of telerehabilitation sessions will be discussed with you and documented.

Where should I do my telerehabilitation session?

We recommend you have your rehabilitation session in a quiet room that has sufficient space to move around. Also please have a stable chair to sit on. If you have equipment such as exercise balls, foam rollers or elastic bands those would also be helpful when it comes time to select your correct exercises. If your setting needs to be modified due to your specific needs, please discuss this with your physiotherapist.

Will these sessions be recorded?

Your physiotherapy services will not be recorded unless both you and your physiotherapist provide consent to recording the session. If consent is received and sessions are recorded, it will be documented accordingly following Standards of Practice.

Do I have to pay for telerehabilitation physiotherapy services?

Yes, there is a cost for telerehabilitation physiotherapy services. Please call (613) 695-1111 for more details.

Are telerehabilitation physiotherapy sessions covered by my insurance?

Most insurance companies cover telerehabilitation physiotherapy sessions. However, we recommend you call your insurance company to confirm that they do cover telerehabilitation sessions.

Will I still receive good quality care through telerehabilitation?

You should expect to receive the same safe quality care that you would get during an in-person visit. You can speak to your physiotherapist in detail about it.

I'm still not sure if I'm convinced about Telerehabilitation. What should I do?
